What qualifications we offer

When pupils are medically well enough we can support them in the completion of the following Primary assessments. These are facilitated in conjunction with the pupils’ home school.

  • Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
  • Year 4 Multiplication Check
  • Key Stage 2 SAT’s
Initial Assessments

Whilst awaiting curriculum information from home schools’ pupils in hospital setting complete an initial ‘assessment booklet’ which has been designed to identify gaps in literacy and maths. The activities focus on Key Performance Indicators for each year group and follow on lessons are tailored to address these gaps in learning.

Phonics levels are assessed using the Twinkl Phonics initial baseline assessment.

Long term pupils are tracked against Early Years Foundation Stage, National Curriculum Age Related Expectations and Pre key Stage Standards on the Tapestry learning Journal. Pupils with PMLD (Profound and Multi Learning Disability) are assessed half termly using the Engagement Scale.

How is Primary at Hospitals & Short Term Provision delivered?

All primary pupils within Hospitals and STP have a home school that they are unable to attend due to a medical need. All pupils are taught within a hospital setting or in their own homes. Sessions are usually delivered on 1:1 basis by a teacher, instructor, or support tutor.

Home schools are liaised with to identify specific areas/topics for learning to ensure continuity for the pupil. Our curriculum aims to target gaps in learning so that all pupils can succeed and begin to take pride in their achievements. We aspire for all pupils to show confidence and enjoyment in reading.

Lessons are based upon the primary National Curriculum but adapt it to meet the needs of the pupil. This includes from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – KS2 as well as Profound and Multiple Learning Disability (PMLD) pupils. At Birmingham Children’s Hospital pupils who are well enough can attend the primary classroom.

Pupils receive access to a minimum of five hours of lessons a week, which can be clustered to support a fun, creative and supportive timetable that will best suit the learning needs of the pupil.

All lessons are recorded onto a Tapestry journal which upon discharge can be shared with pupils’ next provider.

The following Schemes of work are used to support the delivery of home school topics.

Phonics: Twinkl Phonics

Reading Scheme: Bug Club Phonics and Bug Club

Maths: White Rose Maths

English: Pearson Wordsmith and Literacy Shed

Science: Twinkl

Computing: Twinkl

History & Geography: Twinkl

Spring 2: Minibeasts and Growing

Summer 1: Weather

Summer 2: Ticket to Ride

How do we THINK DIFFERENTLY in Primary at Hospitals at STP?

We have a Hospitals thematic curriculum in place for pupils whose home school curriculum is not known. It is intended short-term and medium-term stay pupils, although is available to all our hospital inpatient pupils. The termly cross curricular themes complement key skills from the National Curriculum which pupils would be focusing on in their home schools.

A weekly cycle including: Maths, English, Science, Humanities, Music, Personal Development.

Topics Include: Space, Commonwealth, Extreme Earth, and Rainforests.

How we address gaps in learners’ knowledge

Within the first few days of admission in hospitals, all pupils complete an ‘assessment booklet’ which identify gaps in literacy and maths. Follow on lessons are then tailored to address these gaps in learning through a thematic curriculum. Long term pupils are tracked against Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), National Curriculum Age Related Expectations and Pre key Stage Standards on the Tapestry learning Journal. Pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Disability (PMLD) are assessed half termly using the Engagement Scale. Liaise with home schools to identify specific areas/topics for learning to ensure continuity for the pupil. Schemes of work chosen are predominantly online, meaning pupils are able to access non-paper-based resources which meet the infection control regulations of hospital settings and facilitates any necessity for remote learning.

Career opportunities and pathways

Careers and the skills needed for different jobs are discussed during lessons so that pupils are aware of how their learning will impact the wider world and prepare them for their future. Further lessons are taught as part of the Personal Development curriculum. We aim for pupils to transition back to their own schools in the smoothest possible way.

Intent

At James Brindley School, the Primary curriculum is designed to NURTURE and engage all pupils, whilst developing curiosity and inspiring a life-long love of learning. We create a positive environment for them to THRIVE and succeed. It is designed to provide a comprehensive, INCLUSIVE, and adaptable educational experience that meets the diverse needs of our students.

It aims to ‘fill the gaps’ so that all pupils are enabled to succeed and begin to take pride in their achievements whilst supporting them to understand how to engage in the world and KEEP SAFE despite the challenges they face. Lessons focus on the core subjects Maths, English, Science and PSHE. When appropriate, foundation subjects are taught via a cross curricular approach using our Hospitals curriculum or based upon topics that home schools have requested.

We have HIGH ASPIRATIONS for all pupils to show confidence and enjoyment in reading and staff are committed to developing the whole child to ready them for the next stage of their education and for life outside school.

In Hospitals and Short-Term Provision, we teach from the primary National Curriculum but adapt it to meet the needs of the pupil ensuring that it is INCLUSIVE for all pupils regardless of their medical needs. This includes EYFS – KS2 as well as SEND pupils. For our PMLD learners, we deliver a bespoke curriculum based around the pupil’s interests, home school topics and their EHCP targets. The curriculum is non-subject specific and focuses on individual engagement through sensory based learning. At BCH pupils who are medically well enough can attend the primary classroom for either 1:1 sessions or small group teaching allowing them to socialise with other young people.

Implementation

All our primary pupils have a home school that they are unable to attend due to a medical need. Sessions are usually delivered on 1:1 basis by a teacher, instructor or support tutor.

Home schools are liaised with to identify specific subjects for learning ensuring continuity for the pupil. Staff aim to focus on learning activities based upon the curriculum provided by pupil’s own school. This ensures that they are not disadvantaged and missing key learning that is being completed by their peers. Teaching is personalised to the needs of the individual and lessons are recorded onto a Tapestry journal which upon discharge can be shared with pupils’ next provider

Complementing the home school curriculum pupils complete an initial ‘assessment booklet’ which has been designed to identify gaps in literacy and maths. The activities focus on Key Performance indicators for each year group and follow on lessons are tailored to address these gaps in learning.

The Hospitals’ thematic curriculum is intended for short-term and medium-term stay pupils, although is available to all our hospital inpatient pupils. The termly cross curricular themes complement key skills from the National Curriculum which pupils would be focusing on in their home schools.
