What qualifications we offer

In the PE Curriculum the following Qualifications are available in Key Stage 4:

  • ‘BTEC Level 2 Certificate, Leadership Through Sport
Initial Assessments

The PE curriculum at James Brindley Academy has been designed to suit any learner, no matter what prior knowledge they already have. This is achieved through our stage, not age approach at KS3. Differentiated learning is provided for all individuals across all key stages and settings. New pupils are baselined within six weeks of starting. Pupil progress and forecast grades are then reviewed four times a year. This allows our teachers to identify the most suitable qualification pathways for each pupil.

How is PE delivered?

Throughout KS2, PE is delivered by trained staff across all of our school sectors. The primary staff follow a scheme of work/resources developed by a specified PE lead.

Core PE is implemented across KS3&4. Schemes of work/resources have been developed by our trained PE staff across a wide range of sports and physical outdoor activities.

At KS4, we also offer BTEC qualifications which enable learners to develop their interests further.

All of our carefully selected courses provide a strong focus on keeping learning contextual and vocational, whilst developing both technology and performance skills each year.

Within our hospital and short-term/long term provision settings, we are aware that a full qualification may be unfeasible due to time constraints. With this in mind, we have adapted schemes of work to suit this and keep learners engaged with physical education. Our main aim is to encourage learners to have a fit and healthy lifestyle.

How do we THINK DIFFERENTLY in PE?

To complement the learning, pupils are able to attend a number of educational visits each year to colleges/universities, out of school tournaments, visits to sports grounds and guest career speakers.

We also provide extra-curricular opportunities such as morning, break and lunchtime clubs and inter-sector tournaments which are out of school.

How we address gaps in learners’ knowledge

Teachers at James Brindley are able to identify gaps in knowledge and pupils who are not making expected progress, through a number of ways:

  • Progress reviews (four times a year)
  • Baseline and formative assessments
  • Moderation meetings
  • Book scrutiny exercises
  • Lesson observation & learning walks

Depending on the situation, teachers will take one of the following approaches to address gaps in learning:

  • 1:1 intervention arranged to support learning catch up
  • Additional strategies added to support plans
  • Additional TA support in lessons
  • Communication with parents/carers in relation to learning concerns and suggestions to support their child’s learning.
  • Loaning of equipment to take home for practice.
  • Homework opportunities.
  • Well-being (independent learning sessions).
  • Break & lunch sport clubs.
  • Extra-curricular opportunities
Career opportunities and pathways

The Physical education curriculum focuses on vocational/contextual learning as much as possible. There are many opportunities for pupils to learn about potential careers through educational visits to universities and sports grounds.

It will develop pupils’ knowledge and generic leadership skills that will be vital in other areas of life.

Curriculum Intent

Curriculum Intent

Intent

James Brindley School provides a high-quality Physical Education programme that inspires pupils of all abilities to thrive and succeed. We have high aspirations for all our pupils and so the program has been designed to build character, confidence and resilience, as well as provide opportunities for pupils to compete against others and their own personal bests. We also ensure that our pupils are taught leadership, communication, organisation, problem solving and teamwork skills. The competitive elements of the programme enable pupils to learn how to play fairly, respect others and play by the rules. Our program is fully inclusive and through discussion and working in groups and teams, we celebrate our differences. As a department we pride ourselves on the positive relationships we have with our pupils and through building their confidence and self-esteem we nurture them so they can express their feelings and emotions. Activities help promote health and fitness and challenge pupils to develop physically, socially, and mentally. Through taking part in a range of activities pupils are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone. In order to do this, we ensure that pupils feel safe by creating a nurturing environment in which they can take risks. Pupils will have the opportunity to participate in inter-sector competitions and go on trips and visits to further develop their curiosity and develop their understanding of the subject area.

The Physical Education department has a flexible approach to working with pupils and is fully inclusive, offering pupils an element of choice in the activities they cover. The curriculum is personalised, and pupils have interventions in order to promote their SEMH, positive behaviour and full participation.  Due to the high aspirations we have for our pupils, we have ensured that the curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to achieve qualifications in PE at Key Stage 4.

Implementation

The curriculum for Physical Education at James Brindley School aims to ensure that all pupils who are medically able:

  • Participate and achieve in a broad range of activities suitable to their individual needs;
  • Are physically challenged and active for sustained periods of time;
  • Engage socially with their peers and show them respect;
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities at various levels;
  • Acquire an understanding of how to lead an active and healthy lifestyle;
  • Encourage pupils to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
  • Engage with remote lessons when not able to attend school.
Impact

We help motivate pupils to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging, personalised and fun. From our lessons, pupils take responsibility for their own health and fitness and leave with the knowledge for life- long activity and enjoyment of sport. We equip the young people with leadership, communication, teamwork, organisational and fair play skills that can then be used in further education and employment. Pupils can also achieve their Level 2 BTEC Leadership Through Sport Qualification if they choose to study PE at Key Stage 4.
