Parkway – Key Stage 4 (SEMH)
Welcome
Welcome to James Brindley at Parkway. We are a full-time Teaching Centre provision and cater for up to 106 young people across Years 10 and 11 who haven’t been able to access their mainstream schools for reasons relating to their Social, Emotional or Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Many young people have a range of complex needs, and our therapeutic approach supports learners to engage in their learning.
Smaller class sizes allow for bespoke learning pathways, tailoring learning to individual pupil’s abilities, interests and needs. We offer pupils the opportunity to re-engage with education through the traditional GCSE subjects in conjunction with a range of other qualifications e.g. BTEC and Functional Skills.
Pupils are supported to catch-up and make progress based on assessments from their home schools and robust baseline diagnostics, thus aiming to reduce the impact of their conditions on their educational outcomes.
Parkway KS4 Centre provision seeks to build pupil resilience so that they are able to move onto appropriate post-16 provision following successful completion and attainment of qualifications and skills.
Through our ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ programme, pupils are given the opportunity to participate in a range of life skills, a resilience programme and other activities designed to improve the personal development and wellbeing of all our pupils.
Some pupils will also benefit from additional 1:1 or group mentoring programmes. These may focus on academic study, improvements in literacy/numeracy or be pastoral in approach. Teaching assistants and mentors are used to offer this provision. Some intervention is offered through our Lead Therapeutic Practitioner.
Short-term Provision (STP)
Aside from teaching within the centre at Parkway, we provide home teaching for students who are unable to attend their home school for medical/SEMH reasons.. This is known as Short-term Provision (STP). We offer a maximum of five hours STP teaching. This includes each core subject (English, Maths and Science) being taught in small online groups for one hour per week, per subject. A one-to-one Personal Development lesson is taught in the home as well as one hour of support for options subjects. Progress is tracked and monitored with reviews at six week intervals with a reintegration plan for pupils to return back to the home school or potentially transition to one of our teaching centres.
To be eligible for this type of education, medical evidence from a mental health medical professional is required at the point of referral from the home school.

Curriculum
Parkway offers a broad and balanced curriculum that is differentiated and personalised to the needs of individual pupils. Our aim is that all pupils make or exceed the expected progress of their mainstream peers, however, many will have large gaps in their knowledge and understanding due to times when they were unable to access learning due to their Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
All pupils have access to the core curriculum of English, Maths and Science along with a personal development, Physical Education, pupil voice and wellbeing curriculum.
In addition, pupils will choose 2 options for subjects which may include:

- Geography
- Health and Social Care

- Creative iMedia
- Music
- Public Services
Citizenship and SRE are both taught within the Personal Social Health Citizenship Economic (PSHE) curriculum, in PD (Personal Development ) and PV (Pupil Voice) lessons, alongside Careers and Work-Related Learning. Our Year 10 pupils have an opportunity to participate in Work Experience. Work Related Learning is delivered in line with the Gatsby Benchmarks.
Elements of Religious Education are delivered through the PSHE Curriculum, centre-wide events/assemblies as well as Cross Curricular Learning days of which there are 4 throughout the academic year.
Teaching is well planned to take account of the needs of the pupils and learning pathways will be differentiated to ensure all pupils can achieve – whether this be GCSE, Functional Skills, or Entry Level qualifications.
Our personal development and wellbeing curriculum is devised to develop skills and knowledge in our young people so that they can be lifelong learners that can engage with and contribute to society.
