Trustee

Location: Birmingham (Parkway Centre, Bell Barn Road, B15 2AF and online meetings)

Commitment: Preparation for approximately 6.5 hours per half term for meetings, with additional link visits, panels and training opportunities.

Role Overview:

A diverse academy like JBA needs a diverse set of Trustees. At JBA we ‘Think differently’ and encourage people from every background to bring their own lived experience and perspective to our board. James Brindley Academy is seeking 3 Community Trustees to join our board and provide strategic oversight. As a trustee, you will help develop the academy’s vision and ensure our commitment to providing inclusive, high-quality education for young people with complex medical, emotional, and mental health needs is ongoing.

Trustees play a vital role in the strategic leadership of the by defining the vision for high quality and inclusive education and fostering the trust’s culture. You will provide accountability and assurance by having effective oversight of the operations and performance of the trust. Trustees also provide strategic oversight of stakeholder engagement so that decision-making is supported by the stakeholder view.

Key Responsibilities:

Contribute to strategic discussions on education, staffing, and finances

Monitor the performance of the academy and principal, ensuring clear priorities are met

Engage with key staff and monitor strategic development

Support and challenge the leadership team to ensure continuous improvement

Skills Desired:

The commitment to support young people who are neurodiverse, or have social, emotional and mental health difficulties or are in hospital, have the best education possible.

Analytical mindset with an ability to interpret data

Strong communication skills and willingness to learn

Ability to work collaboratively as part of a board

Requirements:

Applicants must be aged 18 or over at the date of election or appointment.

Appointment Process:

Prospective trustees are invited to observe a board or committee meeting before applying. An informal interview will follow (after completion of application forms) with three trustees, and the board will make the final appointment decision. Community trustees are appointed for four years.
