Welcome to James Brindley Academy at Willows. Willows is a teaching and assessment centre which provides education for young people receiving support for their mental health condition as an inpatient at Parkview Clinic.
Depending on a pupil’s medical treatment, teaching takes place on the ward or at the centre, which is a short walk from the clinic.
The centre is a small school with six classrooms and a hall. It is set in a very peaceful location, which provides a calm environment to work in. Pupils benefit from maintaining their school routine and enjoy coming over to the centre for their lessons.
The centre provides education from KS3 to KS5 (school years 7 to 13). Whilst pupils are at Willows, we keep in touch with their home schools and parents and carers to inform them about both their attendance and progress. We aim to minimise their academic learning missed whilst away from their home school, as well as providing them with a wellbeing curriculum that follows the Thrive Approach.
We have a small team of staff, who create a friendly and welcoming environment. All pupils have a key teacher who work closely with them to ensure the correct curriculum is in place, as well as ensuring any strategies that support their learning are identified and shared with all staff.
The staff at Willows have experience working with young people with mental health conditions, as well as other diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Condition. They work closely with the ward staff, attending Multidisciplinary Team meetings to work together with the shared aim of achieving the best outcomes for the young people at Parkview.

Curriculum
The Willows Curriculum covers Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. Pupils are dual registered with their home school. When pupils arrive at Parkview, we make contact with their home school to obtain details about the curriculum they are following. We aim to continue this learning whilst they are at Willows, so that when they return to their home school, they are able to continue on their learning pathway.
Whilst at Willows, students will have access to a Curriculum containing the following subjects:
- English Language
- English Literature
- Maths
- Science
- Art
- Languages – French & Spanish
- Humanities – History & Geography
- Music
- Cooking
- Personal Development
- Thrive sessions
Key Stage 3 pupils – We follow the curriculum inline with the pupil’s home school. This includes core subjects of English, Maths and Science, as well as Humanities subjects History and Geography, Art, Personal Development, Music and Cooking. We also enrich the curriculum with wellbeing sessions through the Thrive Approach.
Key Stage 4 pupils – We follow the curriculum inline with the pupil’s home school. We aim to accommodate as many of the options as possible. Where we do not have a specialist available, we communicate with the home school to obtain schemes of work and resources to enable the young person to continue with their learning.
Key Stage 5 pupils – We follow the curriculum inline with the pupil’s home school. We aim to provide specialist teachers where possible and tailor the level of support to meet the needs of the young person. Where the young person arrives to us without a home school, we work with them to identify the most appropriate pathway for them. We also provide careers advise in order to support the young person to plan their learning journey.
On occasion, depending on the young person’s mental and physical health, there are times when we tailor the learning pathway to meet the needs of the individual whilst they are at Parkview. These decisions are made as part of the Multidisciplinary Team, as well as with the young person themselves and their parents or carers.
