James Brindley Academy’s Outreach Support Service has recently completed a programme of work with Regents Park Community Primary School, focused on strengthening SEND provision and supporting staff to embed effective communication strategies.
The support included whole-staff training in Intensive Interaction, alongside practical guidance on how this can be used within everyday classroom practice. In addition, communication strategies such as Aided Language Displays and tabbed lanyards were modelled to support consistency and confidence across the setting.
Further recommendations were provided to support transitions, including the use of symbols, objects of reference and transition songs. To enable immediate implementation, a range of physical resources were developed and shared with staff, including Now and Next packs and Aided Language Displays.
Feedback gathered as part of the end of support evaluation highlighted the positive impact of this work. Staff reported increased confidence in their practice, alongside a stronger understanding of the importance of early communication strategies. These approaches are now being actively used within the school.
There has also been a noticeable improvement in relationships between pupils and staff, reflecting the value of a consistent and informed approach to communication and support. This case demonstrates the impact of targeted outreach work and the positive changes that can
