James Brindley's vision states ‘all children and young people have the right to an education that provides them with the skills and opportunity to achieve their potential regardless of their circumstances or medical needs’ and believe that careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) is at the heart of achieving this. We are committed to developing a programme that is creative and robust yet flexible to meet all pupils’ needs. We support pupils in making well-informed decisions by providing access to differentiated, impartial and independent information and guidance about the range of options to help them to achieve their goals. 

The CEIAG Team

At James Brindley we have a whole approach to careers with all staff supporting the delivery of CEIAG through the pastoral system and within curriculum areas. In addition, we have an expanding designated CEIAG team who co-ordinate and monitor the delivery of the Academy Careers Plan:

Our CEIAG programme in our teaching centres from Y7 through to Y11

Aims of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) at James Brindley:  

  • to provide inspiration, raise aspirations and broaden pupils options
  • to inspire and to empower pupils to make informed realistic decisions at key transition points
  • to provide good quality impartial careers advice to pupils which inspires them and motivates them to fulfil their potential
  • to provide advice and guidance which is in the best interests of the pupil
  • to work in partnership with employers, training providers, local colleges, specialist provision and others to provide opportunities to inspire students through real-life contact with the world of work
  • to develop enterprise and employability skills including skills for self-employment
  • to support inclusion, challenge stereotyping and promote equality of opportunity
  • to develop a fit for purpose careers programme which provides pupils with the knowledge and inspiration to succeed in their chosen career paths  based on the CDI Framework for Careers, Enterprise and Employability (2018) and the DfE document "Careers Guidance and Inspiration in Schools" (January 2018).
  • to support a structured work experience programme for Year 10 pupils in our teaching centres in June each year. Our newly appointed Employment Engagement Officer will develop a range of work related learning opportunities that pupils in all of our sectors will be able to access.

We are enthusiastic to announce that from September 2018 we are working towards a careers, education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) award The Quality in Careers Standard. It provides a good practice framework for organisations that work with young people, which includes, schools, colleges, and other learning providers.

The Academy Careers Plan supports the achievement of the eight Gatsby benchmarks as stated in the DfE document "Careers Guidance and Inspiration in Schools" (January 2018):

  • Benchmark 1: A Stable Careers Programme

Every school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by Students, parents, teachers, governors and employers.

  • Benchmark 2: Learning from Career and Labour Market Information

Every Student and their parents should have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make the best use of available information.

  • Benchmark 3: Addressing the Needs of Each Student

Students have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each Student. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.

  • Benchmark 4: Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers

All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of careers paths.

  • Benchmark 5: Encounters with Employers and Employees

Every Student should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.

  • Benchmark 6: Experiences of Workplaces

Every Student should have first-hand experience of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing, and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.

  • Benchmark 7: Encounters with Further and Higher Education

All Students should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.

  • Benchmark 8: Personal Guidance

Every Student should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a careers adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. They should be expected for all Students but should be timed to meet their individual needs.

Measuring the impact of our careers programme

The Academy’s progress towards achieving the Gatsby Benchmarks will be evaluated using the online Careers and Enterprise Compass tool and through working towards The Quality in Careers Award. This will be continuous with the aim of meeting all the Gatsby Benchmarks by 2020. 

Provision will be monitored through regular feedback from pupils, staff, governors and our partners.  This feedback will be collected through questionnaires and focus groups following key careers activities throughout the academic year.  This will be analysed by the Careers Lead and CEIAG Coordinator with actions fed back to staff via CEIAG team meetings.  Key action points will also be included in the annual CEIAG development plan and the Academy development plan. 

The effectiveness of our CEIAG programme will be reflected in the numbers of pupils progressing to positive destinations such as traineeships, apprenticeships, mainstream and special schools with sixth forms, sixth form colleges,  mainstream and specialist further education colleges, employment or voluntary work with training. Destination data is used to assess how successfully pupils make the transition to the next stage and to inform future CEIAG provision.  This will be analysed by the Careers Lead and CEIAG Coordinator with actions fed back to staff via CEIAG team meetings.  Key action points will also be included in the annual CEIAG development plan and the Academy development plan. 

The CEIAG policy will be reviewed on an annual basis by the Careers Lead and CEIAG Coordinator and then ratified by Governors.
