Numeracy
At James Brindley, we follow nationally recognised courses and qualifications, including OCR Functional Skills at all levels and Edexcel awards. This complements the general expectations that pupils will follow the AQA GCSE course from year 9. Post 16 education is supported where appropriate, rising to A-Level where suitable staff are available.
We expect to help all longer term pupils achieve qualifications throughout their time with us. The range of qualifications available means we should always be aiming for another after a certificate is passed or needs to be retaken.
KS4
AQA GCSE Maths. Pupils will cover the three year course from year 9 to 11.
All pupils will take Mathematics at GCSE level. If GCSE is not an appropriate level, pupils will have the opportunity to take Entry level Certificates, Functional Skills Certificates and will work towards GCSE. As Edexcel awards can be taken in January and June, we hope to offer these as an extra, regular opportunity to gain a qualification.
Assessments:
GCSE Mathematics has a Foundation tier (grades 1 - 5) and a Higher tier (grades 4 - 9). Pupils must take three question papers at the same tier. All question papers must be taken in the same series, usually June but a November retake is possible.
Functional Skills Entry Level , Levels 1 to 3 can be taken as a stand-alone short assessment with the class teacher at any time.
OCR Functional Skills at Level 1 or 2 is a longer exam (1 hr 30 min) under normal conditions, requested at about two weeks notice by the class teacher.
Edexcel Awards are in Number and Measure (level 1 and 2), Algebra (levels 2 to 3) and Statistical Methods (levels 1 to 3). They are sat as a public exam in January and June. Entries are discussed with the Director of Maths according to suitability.
AQA Entry level awards are also available in a wide variety of tasks, suitable for lower ability pupils, managed by the class teacher and approved adjudicators.
