Richard Winter | Education Manager | HS2 Ltd
'I am the Education Manager for HS2, responsible for the work that we do in schools to inspire young people to take an interest in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) subjects and careers. I grew up in Birmingham and worked as primary school teacher in the UK and abroad, before focusing on STEM education, first at the Thinktank Science Museum and now through my role at HS2.
At HS2 I work with suppliers and volunteers from our business to deliver activities that help young people to develop their Essential Skills and careers knowledge. Our Education Programme includes hands on STEM workshops, support for school careers activities like mock interviews, stands at large careers events like the Big Bang Fair and work experience placements. We want to improve diversity in our sector, and to encourage young people who might not have thought about a career in engineering, construction or rail to find out jobs that could be a good match for their skills and interests.I was keen to become an Enterprise Advisor at a SEND school as I believe it is important that all young people are supported to build a successful future.
I hope that working with James Brindley School will help me to make sure that the HS2 Education Programme is accessible to all young people. I understand that it can be difficult for SEND schools to build relationships with employers, so I hope that through the contacts I can bring in the HS2 supply chain I will be able to help James Brindley School to connect with more local companies'.
James Brindley's vision states ‘all children and young people have the right to an education that provides them with the skills and opportunity to achieve their potential regardless of their circumstances or medical needs’ and believe that careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) is at the heart of achieving this. We are committed to developing a programme that is creative and robust yet flexible to meet all pupils’ needs. We support pupils in making well-informed decisions by providing access to differentiated, impartial and independent information and guidance about the range of options to help them to achieve their goals.

We are developing our Careers programme in our teaching centres from Y7 through to Y11
Aims of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) at James Brindley:
- to provide inspiration, raise aspirations and broaden pupils options
- to inspire and to empower pupils to make informed realistic decisions at key transition points
- to provide good quality impartial careers advice to pupils which inspires them and motivates them to fulfil their potential
- to provide advice and guidance which is in the best interests of the pupil
- to work in partnership with employers, training providers, local colleges, specialist provision and others to provide opportunities to inspire students through real-life contact with the world of work
- to develop enterprise and employability skills including skills for self-employment
- to support inclusion, challenge stereotyping and promote equality of opportunity
- to develop a fit for purpose careers programme which provides pupils with the knowledge and inspiration to succeed in their chosen career paths based on the CDI Framework for Careers, Enterprise and Employability (2018) and the DfE document "Careers Guidance and Inspiration in Schools" (January 2018).
- to support a structured work experience programme for Year 10 pupils in our teaching centres in June each year. The Employment Engagement Officer has developed a range of work related learning opportunities that pupils in all sectors can access.
We are working towards a careers, education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) award The Quality in Careers Standard. It provides a good practice framework for organisations that work with young people, which includes, schools, colleges, and other learning providers.
The Academy Careers Action Plan supports the achievement of the eight Gatsby benchmarks as stated in the DfE document "Careers Guidance and Inspiration in Schools" (January 2018).

How to find volunteering opportunities in your local area
Measuring the impact of our careers programme
The Academy’s progress towards achieving the Gatsby Benchmarks will be evaluated using the online Careers and Enterprise Compass tool and through working towards The Quality in Careers Award. This will be continuous with the aim of meeting all the Gatsby Benchmarks by 2020.
Provision will be monitored through regular feedback from pupils, parents, carers, staff, governors and our partners. This feedback will be collected through questionnaires and focus groups following key careers activities throughout the academic year. This will be analysed by the Careers Lead and Careers team with actions fed back to staff via careers team meetings and to the senior leadership team. Key action points will also be included in the Careers Action Plan.
The effectiveness of our careers programme will be reflected in the numbers of pupils progressing to positive destinations such as traineeships, apprenticeships, mainstream and special schools with sixth forms, sixth form colleges, mainstream and specialist further education colleges, employment or voluntary work with training. Destination data is used to assess how successfully pupils make the transition to the next stage and to inform future careers provision. This will be analysed by the Careers Lead and careers team with actions fed back to staff via careers team meetings. Key action points will also be included in the annual careers development plan and the Academy development plan.
The careers policy was written and approved by the senior leadership team in October 2020.
